3X3 Festival: from international stars to rising talent
If the first day was a promising start, then day two proved that the 3X3 Festival is a real success. The combination of top-level sport, entertainment and activities created a fantastic atmosphere on Saturday at the NDSM Wharf.
Inside the impressive stadium, visitors enjoyed games at the highest level. The Dutch teams made their mark during the FIBA 3x3 World Tour and 3x3 Women’s Series, while the stands continued to fill up. But there was not only plenty of spectacle in the stadium; the entire festival site was buzzing throughout the day.
On the outdoor courts, young people competed against each other and the finals of the 3x3 Rabo Street League were played in various age categories. Along the sidelines, parents and other spectators cheered them on while music echoed across the festival grounds. “It’s wonderful that young people can not only watch the top players, but can also truly feel like top players themselves”, said Jesper Jobse, tournament director and co-founder of 3X3 Unites.
According to him, that is exactly what 3X3 Unites stands for. “Everything that 3x3 basketball has to offer, we bring together this weekend at the 3X3 Festival”, says Jesper. “And all of that with the commitment and enthusiasm of our own 3X3 Leaders. I think it’s really awesome to see!”
Besides the finals of the 3x3 Rabo Street League, there were also all kinds of other activities across the festival grounds. From the Panna Knock Out tournament to the popular game cornhole. Everywhere you looked on the festival site, there was something happening and visitors had smiles on their faces. “Of course, what is happening inside the big stadium is incredibly cool”, says Jesper. “But I might find it even cooler to see everything that is going on around the festival grounds.”
Jesper is already looking forward to the final day. The finals of the Rabo 3x3 Street League will continue. And the FIBA 3x3 World Tour & Women’s Series are building towards their climax, with Dutch contenders still in the race for the title. In the men’s competition, Team Amsterdam, featuring Olympic champions Worthy de Jong and Jan Driessen among others, remains in the tournament. In the women’s competition, the Dutch 3x3 women’s basketball team is still fighting for the title.
“It’s really great that two Dutch teams are still competing for the overall victory in front of their home crowd”, says Jesper. “It would be fantastic if we actually end up with one or even two Dutch winners.”
